The Highland Games as standard consist of seven events. The group is divided into teams beforehand. The teams compete against each other in a tournament format over six events. Tug-of-war is the final game.
Caber Tossing
Contrary to popular belief, it is not the distance but the style of execution that is most important. The participant must lift the upright log themselves, with the thickest end at the top. After a run-up, they suddenly stop and throw the log upwards. The log must actually tilt, otherwise the throw is invalid.
Putting the keystone
Each participant throws a stone as far as possible from a standing position. Stone throwing remains popular because it is spectacular and is likely one of the oldest tests of strength in the world.
The Caber Wave (log slalom)
Which team runs the fastest through a slalom course with a log on their shoulder?
Trunk sawing
In log rolling, slices must be sawn from the tree trunk each time. This continues until each team member has had a turn at least once. The team that does this fastest wins.
Hammer throw
With the feet in a fixed position, the hammer is swung over the head and thrown over the shoulder for distance.
Archery
Archery is a sport in which arrows are shot at a target using a bow.
Tug of War
The Highland Games conclude with the final event, tug of war. Based on the results, each team competes against the team ranked immediately above or below them, thereby determining the final standings.
